Inhabitants of Mpirem, a community at Asante Mampong engaged a gang of three suspected armed robbers in a shoot out in the early hours of yesterday, wounding one of them.
The Mpirem community had prior knowledge of the robbers’ attack thanks to a tip off.
But in what is seen by many as a departure from the recent familiar episodes of mob lynching of such suspects, the people of Mpirem handed over the wounded man to the police.
However, the two other members of the gang who were later identified by the Police as Kojo Frimpong and Kwabena Adjei managed to flee.
The wounded man, named as Kumasi Owusu Agyemang is in hospital ay Asante Mampong under the police guard, Chief Superintendent Augustine Gyening, Mampong Divisional Police Commander has said.
Police investigators are working on the theory that it was the same gang that had raided the local St. Monica Training College earlier on.
One of their cars has been impounded pending further investigations, he said.
