Armed robber lynched

An alleged armed robber was on Wednesday, lynched by an unidentified group at Lamashigu, a suburb of Tamale in the northern region. The deceased, whose body has been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital mortuary was said to have attempted to seize a motorbike from the owner at dawn. An eye witness who pleaded anonymity told the Ghanaian Times said that, the alleged armed robber together with another person attacked a motor rider in a dark corner on his way home. He said the motor rider raised an alarm when the alleged armed robber pursued him after he had refused to stop. The alarm, according to the eyewitness, attracted a lot of the youth in the area to the scene and when the suspected robber saw the mob approaching, he took to his heels but he was arrested and beaten to death. The eyewitness said but for the intervention of some elders among the crowd, the body would have been set ablaze. The Tamale Metropolitan Police Commander, DSP Caesar Abanga who confirmed the incident to the times said the police are still carrying out investigations. He, however, condemned the action of the unidentified group maintaining that “instant justice was not the best.” DSP Abanga lamented that several innocent persons had been victims of such circumstance and therefore advised the people in the metropolis against taking the law in their hands by meting out instant justice to people with suspected characters. He advised that people with questionable characters should rather be reported to the police for proper investigations. This is the second time an alleged armed robber has been lynched in the metropolis within a month.
