In a remarkable achievement, Anthony Elikem Essah, a student from Prime Academy in Afienya, has emerged as the first African and Ghanaian to win the Global Spelling Championship.
Anthony, along with four teammates, represented Ghana at the annual Inter-Continental Spelling Bee competition in Dubai, earning enviable laurels and qualifying for the global level.
The team's stellar performance was celebrated with a grand ceremony at the school.
"The exposure has helped us become more resilient, determined, and open to learning other cultures," Anthony said, describing his experience.
Clifford Justice Nartey, the school's spelling bee coach, credited the team's success to rigorous preparation.
"The process was tedious, but we spent extra time beyond learning hours to shape the students for the competition," Mr. Nartey said.
Anthony reflected on his journey, saying, "I've discovered the richness of language, developed resilience, critical thinking, and perseverance."
Prime Academy, established in 2008, has consistently demonstrated excellence in education, according to Head Teacher Kwaku Mensah.
The Global Spelling Bee contest is organized by British University, Dubai, in partnership with Edupro Concepts Organization.
The team will compete in the African Spelling Bee Competition in Nigeria this December and attend the UK academic camp in July 2026.
