Several properties including vehicles and motor bikes were Tuesday morning set ablaze on the premises of Radio Justice in Tamale by angry youth.

The youth from Lamashegu in Tamale besieged the radio station demanding that a New Patriotic Party representative on the morning show discussion be produced.

Radio Justice's Martina Bugri reported that the officials of the station refused and called the police to intervene.

But before the police arrived an hour after they were called, the angry youth had set fire to about four vehicles and a number of motor bikes parked in the premises of the radio station.

The attack is believed to  be a reprisal against Monday's lynching of a man believed to be a member of the governing Nantional Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Kandahar Boys, a Tamale-based youth group of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) were accused of masterminding the lynching - an allegation members of the group vehemently denied.

Early Tuesday, some NDC went to Radio Justice to announce that members of the party were to assemble at the deceased's house to take the body of Mustapha Abdul Rashid for burial.

Some members of this group later besieged the station to cause chaos and to demand that the NPP representative on the show be produced.

Martina Bugri said when managers of the station suspected some of the youth had mounted surveilance obviously to create problems, they alerted the police.

She said it took the police an hour to respond and even then, a patrol team just passed through the station and drove off.

                        

According to the reporter, when the numbers of the attackers started increasing, a second call was placed to the Tamale Metroplitan Police Commander who caused another contingent of policemen to come to the station but the harm had been done - vehicles and motorbikes were up in flames.

She reported that the citizens appear to be losing confidence in the police and have called for reinforcement.

Northern Region Police PRO ASP Ebenezer Tetteh said the police are firmly on the ground and have begun investigating the case.

He cautioned radio panellists to be careful what issues they discuss on radio, adding, the police will be meeting owners of radio stations to discuss the way forward.
