The Fomena legislator who is running as an independent candidate, says he is still the MP for the area despite suggestions he has forfeited his seat.
The NPP MP Andrew Amoako Asiamah has been expelled from the party after his decision to go independent.
In an interview with Papa Nyamekye on Nhyira FM’s ‘Kuro Yi Mu Nsem,’ his spokesperson, Seth Oduro explained that the expulsion of Mr Asiamah from the NPP doesn't mean he has vacated his seat in Parliament.
“When someone is expelled from Parliament, it's a parliamentary issue. If the NPP says they don't need Mr Asiamah now, it's about Parliament deciding what its next line of action will be.
"Since a by-election cannot be held now, then Parliament cannot also subject him to the sanctions now. It's NPP he’s been expelled from but he’s still our MP. Fomena NPP MP is Andrew Asiamah and there is no doubt. Nobody can take that away from us,” he said.
Mr Oduro said the party sidelined the MP in events leading to the NPP’s parliamentary primaries. In his view, the NPP just announced his expulsion for publicity sake.
“We’re not surprised at the expulsion. When Mr Asiamah sent his grievances to the party, they did nothing to address his concerns, meaning he was sidelined from the party a long time ago. It just got official for everyone to know about his expulsion”.
Mr. Asiamah withdrew from the NPP primaries, leaving his main contender, Philip Ofori Asante, to run unopposed after controversy involving the party’s delegate’s register.
The practicing lawyer entered Parliament on his first stint in 2017.
He hopes to maintain his seat as Parliamentary candidate for the Fomena Constituency, but this time as an independent candidate.
