It was during the 2010 World Cup that Abedi Pele’s son made his name. The young striker exploded onto the scene in South Africa with Ghana, making the quarter-finals of the competition.
In the Ligue 2 last season, he has actively participated in the promotion campaign of Arles-Avignon in the midfield. This season, it's higher up the pitch on the left flank of the Olympian attack that the young Ghanaian blazed his trail. In the starting line-up from the beginning of the season, he scored his first goal during Week 2 away to Valenciennes, and then his first double haul against his former club in Week 6 and a hat-trick, his first in the L1, against Nice (Week 32).
Throughout the season, always accompanied by the confidence of Didier Deschamps, he racked up matches in the starting line-up and goals in the league and Coupe de la Ligue. With one match left to be played, he has 11 goals in the Ligue 1 and 2 in the Coupe de la Ligue.
It was also this season, that he shone with OM in the Champions League. At 20 years of age (he had not yet celebrated his 21st birthday at the beginning of the competition), he did not tremble when they walked out on the pitch to the traditional music of the most prestigious competitions in Europe.
Loaned to Arles-Avignon last year, André Ayew did not experience the Coupe de la Ligue/Ligue 1 double of 2010. He therefore particularly wanted to win a trophy this season. This was done with success in the final of the Coupe de la Ligue against Montpellier at the Stade de France.
"What remains in history, are the titles. Winning is a great feeling," says André Ayew. I am very happy to have won a trophy with OM especially since the club has produced many young players over the years, such as Nasri or Bocaly, but these players won nothing with the club. Jordan was champion of France last year but he played few matches. I really wanted to win something with my club, having played in a lot of matches. But I would have preferred winning the league title!".
Elected nine times "Olympian of the Match" but also "Olympian of the Month" in March and April, André Ayew has thus been awarded the title of best player of the season.
The youngster received his trophy, with his father Abedi Pele, during the program "Un Jour à l’OM" on the 26th of May 2011. "It gives me great pleasure, it is the reward of years of work, but this is only the beginning."
At 21, he really does have the future ahead of him!
