With more than 2000 medical workers in Ghana infected by the coronavirus outbreak, the situation has been blamed on the lack of PPEs needed in their line of duty.
While six out of the total number are dead, the Ghana Health Service says about 183 frontline workers remain under treatment at various isolation centres or isolated at home.
In his latest documentary in collaboration with BBC Africa Eye, Ghanaian investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas went undercover in one of Ghana’s largest hospitals to investigate the continuous shortage of the ‘life-saving’ overalls.
At the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, the team was able to purchase some PPEs from Thomas Osei, a Medicine Counter Assistant and Divine Kumordzi who works with the Sewing Unit of the Hospital.
The culprits have subsequently been supended.
In a statement announcing actions taken against the two, Ridge Hospital insists the PPEs did not belong to the hospital, nor is it a part of the hospital’s Covid-19 stock.
However, the Hospital deems the act as one that “constitutes a breach of the Ghana Health Service Code of Conduct” with the potential of “tarnishing the image of the hospital”.
“As a hospital, we do not encourage this behaviour as it may adversely affect our output and also be misconstrued by the public as items of the facility,” it said.
Meanwhile, social media users have expressed mixed reactions to the 7 minutes video.

Too much ambiguity. If the said PPE belonged to the individual, why paint such a grim picture. pic.twitter.com/OKtJFmFuQt
UNICORN's CEO told Anas that, Thomas purchased the PPEs, they thought he would deliver them to the Ridge Hospital as "they do not condone selling to hospitals for private people to sell to the public". Allegedly, he used the hospital to get the PPEs & sold them at the hospital pic.twitter.com/k0hCqR1pEg
