Physician and political activist, Dr. Arthur Kennedy Arthur Kennedy, has stated that U.S court ruling in investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and former Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong's case proves justice is not reserved for the powerful.
The Superior Court of New Jersey has awarded Anas Aremeyaw Anas $18 million in damages in a defamation lawsuit against former Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, and Frederick Asamoah, a social media commentator.
Mr Kennedy, reflecting on Anas' remarks following the judgment, emphasised the broader implications for journalists and press freedom across Africa.
"I listened to Anas yesterday, and what struck me was his comment that, in Africa, justice is sometimes only for the powerful. But this ruling has shown that justice should not only be for the powerful," he stated in an interview on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, March 22.
The jury found Mr Agyapong guilty of malicious defamation and awarded Anas $18 million in damages. Kennedy underscored the importance of fair judicial processes, expressing hope that Ghana’s judiciary would take lessons from the case.
"I think it is good for these matters to go through a fair judicial process so that people can have confidence in the courts. I hope Ghana's judiciary is watching, so that in the future, when they adjudicate similar cases, they will be guided by the supreme interest of the law," he added.
Offering advice to Kennedy Agyapong, he noted that much of the case hinged on the politician’s own statements.
"Maybe Honourable Kennedy Agyapong should be careful about saying too much, because a lot of what happened was that they used his words against him," he remarked.
