As you are very much aware, too many Ghanaians lack the basic necessities of life, even though by God’s grace, Ghana is endowed with all that it takes to make here a better place where every Ghanaian can enjoy reasonable comfort. Like your predecessors, you are doing everything possible to put a smile on the face of the poor majority who are wallowing in abject poverty and misery. I believe your great concern for the poor majority compelled you to deny yourself of your right to the per diem established for the presidency. This spirit of self –denial that you have demonstrated, will go down in history. Only one out of a million people will practice such a virtue. I believe that generations not yet born, will come to bless you. Indeed you have set a great example for your immediate collaborators and the rest of Ghanaians to emulate, keep it up. As I reflect with you on your extraordinary spirit of self-denial, I would like to urge and encourage you in a very humble way to concentrate on your great desire and efforts to liberate the poor majority, who lack the basic necessities of life, from their abject poverty and misery. Do not allow anyone or anything to influence you to lose your focus. The needs of Ghanaians are many and there is no way you can provide all of them within eight (8) years, if God wants you to stay in power for that long. But one thing that I am very sure of is: if you are able to help the poor to have access to at least the basic necessities of life, to enable them to enjoy reasonable comfort in life, it may be the greatest achievement in the history of Ghanaian politics, since the main purpose and objective of winning political power is to help the governed to have access to at least the basic necessities of life. Imagine a ruler, entrusted with copious resources of the state, has access to all the good things of life, because of his or her presidency, and at the end of his or her two terms of office, most of the people that he or she has been entrusted with, continue to lack the basic necessities of life, he or she would have indeed failed and betrayed them. In view of this basic fact about failure and betrayal, I would like to encourage you to concentrate on leading Ghana to direct most of her time, energy and funds to engaging in activities that will help the poor who form the majority of Ghanaians, to have at least the basic necessities of life, to demonstrate that Ghana is not only for a few privileged people but for us all. As far as the nature of the Ghanaian partisan politics is concerned, you cannot successfully please everybody. Concentrate on bridging the gab between the poor and the rich and you will be called the father of the poor, which is easier to be than struggling to please everybody. If we want to motivate people with state funds, let us motivate those whose tireless efforts help the poor and needy to improve their standard of living. Please for now; lead Ghana to find her pride in activities that benefit the poor who dominate our dear nation. In the very near future, FIFA, GFA and some media people will be bombarding our eyes and ears with the next World Cup in Brazil. Let us be truthful to ourselves and believe and accept the fact that our participation in the FIFA World Cup, expensive as it is, dose not help improve the quality of life of the ,masses who form the majority of our population. Let us admit the fact that football or the FIFA World Cup, is not a basic necessity of life. It is not necessary for our survival as human beings. Normally, the FIFA World Cup, greatly benefits only a few Ghanaians, who may already be fabulously rich, to the detriment of the poor majority access to the basic necessities of life. Let us not allow anyone to throw dust into our eyes and deceive us to think that our participation in the FIFA World Cup will market Ghana and therefore, bring investors into Ghana. The question we need to ask is: how many serious and genuine investors have gone to Brazil because she has won the FIFA World Cup several times? What indeed attract genuine and serious investors into a country are: excellent hospitality, political stability, impartial and dependable judicial system, good infrastructure and water, regular and affordable power supply, availability of raw materials as well as the country’s leaders’ ability to market the country abroad. We need to invest, have the resources to improve the standard of living of the poor majority, then we have an even playing field to compete in FIFA World Cup with developed nations. If we are the world football champion and we are very poor in basic things that attract serious and genuine investors, no serious and genuine investors will come into our country. Besides, the FIFA world cup is not the only entertainment available, therefore, for now, due to our self- imposed poverty and scarcity of the basic necessities of life, whatever resources we intend to vote for the next FIFA World Cup, let us use those funds for the provision of potable water for deprived communities and the construction of proper drainages so that the poor in our cities, towns and villages are not swept away by flood. Constructing proper drainages to save life is more important than “football pride” as well as pouring onto our streets with brass band music to enjoy “football pride”. Even though, Ghanaians live in the midst of plenty, and have all that it takes to make Ghana a paradise, majority of us lack the basic necessities of life and this is mainly due to lack of proper prioritization of our needs. I know that you are a sports man and the temptation for you to lead the state to spend huge sums of money on football is very strong. For now, kindly resist this temptation, and lead the nation to revive serious physical education (PE) in all our schools, lead us to build gymnasium at public places, where people can easily go to do body exercises. For now, let us promote national body exercises and forget about international tournaments that do not help the poor majority to have access to the basic necessities of life. Boxing is a deadly game, do not worry yourself about it. When we have been able to provide the basic needs of all Ghanaians, we can then begin to think about competing with the fabulously rich, for ostentatious earthly desires. We should take note that the FIFA World Cup is a very expensive game and an even playing field is very important for any genuine competition. Asking very poor countries to compete with fabulously rich countries for a football trophy is not the best thing to do, because it is not fair. By Rev. Fr.
