The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has initiated a process of generating energy from the tones of waste generated in the metropolis.
Currently, the AMA is grappling with management of waste – estimated to be over 20,000 metric tones – generated in the metropolis daily.
Chief Executive Officer Dr Alfred Vanderpuiye said the waste-to-energy project would be financed by private companies interested in waste management.
He was speaking to Joy News at the launch of a World Bank competition to reward individuals and organizations with creative ideas to manage waste generated in the countries cities and towns.
Dr Vanderpuiye said the assembly has already selected a number companies that would provide full funding for the project.
“We have learnt from mistakes of the past and we are taking our time to cross all our “Ts” and dot all our “Is” to make sure that this programme becomes a viable and sustainable programme for the city of Accra, he said.
