AMA cautions taxi drivers, hawkers

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Friday ordered taxi drivers who are yet to register with the Assembly for embossment of their cabs to do so immediately. It also cautioned hawkers who are still selling on pavements and at traffic intersections to leave or risk arrest. In a statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of AMA, the Assembly reminded taxi drivers that they are to dress in their prescribed uniform and warned that the police and AMA metro guards would soon begin enforcement of the directive. The statement said out of the 10,363 taxis registered with the AMA, 6,708 have been embossed leaving an outstanding number of 3,655. The release warned that hawkers found on pavements and traffic intersections would be prosecuted when arrested. It said out of a total of 117 hawkers who have been prosecuted, 12 have been imprisoned and 76 have been sentenced to fines ranging from 2.4 million cedis to three million cedis. It said 29 cases are pending. AMA said six persons brought before the La Magistrate's Court by the Nungua sub-metropolitan District Council for indiscriminate defecation in the public were convicted and fined. The convicts in default would serve three months in prison. Source: GNA
