The Minister of Defense General Henry Smith, has given the assurance that government will thoroughly investigate recent allegations of human rights violations by some military officers in the northern parts of the country.
In the latest incident some soldiers are being accused of raping some girls at Nalerigu in the Northern Region.
A nineteen-year-old apprentice told Joy News she was raped by one soldier and a policeman in Nalerigu during a military operation to restore calm after some people went on rampage to demand justice over the murder of former People’s National Convention (PNC) parliamentary candidate, Moses Alando Banaba.
She claims the officers took turns to forcibly have sex with her. The victim told Joy News she sustained serious injuries and has since been to hospital for treatment.
Earlier, there had been allegations of maltreatment of two men alleged to have gone on a shooting spree in Bawku. Soldiers allegedly stripped the suspects naked and beat them up.
But the Defense Minister said Ghanaians should bear with the military as investigations are conducted.
“At the appropriate time we’ll let the public know of our findings,” he said.
