Teenager Alexander Allotey secured the first victory of his career as a professional cyclist with a shock win at the second stage of the 2019 Cowbell Cycling Challenge Homowo Edition.
The 16-year-old sprinted to victory in the 21-lap criterium road race (a bike race consisting of several laps around a closed circuit) on Saturday (August 31) at Prampram.
Allotey, a member of the Quick-Step Cycling Club upset some much-fancied riders including the winner of stage one of the competition Frank Akuffo and Emmanuel Sackey to win the race in a time of two hours and 14 minutes (2:14:00).
Victor Cudjo tried in vain to pip the young speedster in the final lap but Allotey held him off with Razak Umar crossing the finish line in third place. All three winners mounted the podium to receive a prize package which included; assorted Cowbell products and souvenirs from the race sponsor, Promasidor Ghana Limited.
"It is a pleasant surprise to win this race and I thank my mentor Frank Akuffo for training me to win this race," Allotey said in an interview with the Daily Graphic.
"It's only been a year since I started cycling professionally and I hope to do well in the final stage next week at Teshie".
The final stage of the 2019 Cowbell Cycling Challenge Homowo Edition comes off on September 7 at Teshie.
According to the Brands Manager of Cowbell, Mr Joseph Ashong the Teshie stage is the climax of the competition and the overall winner and the winners of the various stages will be presented with their cash prizes.
