The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed disappointment with the mode in which former Trade and Industry Minister, John Alan Kyerematen chose to exit the party.
Alan in a press conference on Monday announced his breakaway from the NPP with immediate effect citing a number of reasons including intimidation of supporters, not being treated fairly among others.
He declared his interest to contest in the 2024 election as an independent presidential candidate.
Responding to Mr Kyerematen’s exit from the party, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua described his resignation as premeditated and irrevocable.
This, he stated is because Mr Kyerematen resigned without prior notice to the party.
“The party wants to believe that by his [Alan] decision to hold a press conference to resign without first informing the leadership of the party suggests that he made a premeditated and irrevocable decision to resign from the party,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.
He added that his exit “means emphasising that when the National Chairman visited him on behalf of the party after the August 26 special electoral college in an attempt to bring all the 10 aspirants together, he did not portray any sign of resigning from the party left alone going independent.”
Mr Frimpong Kodua said the NPP acknowledges Mr Kyerematen’s contribution to the party’s growth and development over the years.
“We respect his decision and extend our gratitude for the services rendered to the NPP and mother Ghana,” he added.
Meanwhile, the NPP says they will not hesitate to expel any member who declares support for Mr Kyerematen.
This is according to the party’s Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye.
