President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former United States President Jimmy Carter, hailing him as a “statesman, humanitarian, and peacemaker” whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.
In a heartfelt statement on Monday, December 30, President Akufo-Addo described Carter as a tireless advocate for democracy, human rights, and the underprivileged, and a man of deep faith.
“He leaves behind a legacy that exemplifies compassion, humility, and an unalloyed commitment to making the world a better place,” he said.
Reflecting on Carter’s impact beyond the borders of his homeland, the President noted the transformative work of the Carter Center in eradicating guinea worm disease, which brought immense relief to communities in Ghana.
"The world has, indeed, lost a good man with his passing. His empathy and humanity resonated deeply across borders, leaving a legacy of hope and healing in places far from his homeland, including Ghana," President Akufo-Addo stated.
He praised Carter’s unwavering empathy and humanity, which resonated deeply with the Ghanaian people and reinforced shared values of democracy and human rights.
To the Carter family, President Joe Biden, and the people of the United States, President Akufo-Addo extended Ghana’s condolences, saying, “May his soul rest in perfect peace in the Bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection when we shall all meet again. Amen.”
The former US President died on Sunday afternoon at his home in Plains, Georgia.
Carter served as the 39th president from 1977 until 1981. He was aged 100, making him the longest-lived president in US history.
During his tenure as president Carter faced a spate of foreign policy challenges and the Democrat was defeated in his re-election bid by Ronald Reagan.
