A founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Tuesday asked the flag-bearer of the party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to be very cautious in choosing a running mate for the forthcoming general election.
Mr Daniel Bugri Naabu, who was interacting with journalists in Accra, said the selection of a running mate should be broad-based, stressing that the hands of Nana Akufo-Addo should not be tied to nominees from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions alone.
“There are a lot of conflicts in the North, which are tied to ethnic considerations, so if Nana Akufo-Addo is not careful, he could undermine the electoral fortunes of the NPP by nominating the wrong person.
“To me the only option left for the flagbearer is to select a running mate from any of the minority ethnic groups in the area or go beyond the North to get a credible person for the party.
Mr Bugri Naabu observed that the December elections are crucial election, hence the need for the party hierarchy to sit up and not to allow any parochial interests or pressure from any person or group of persons to colour the choice of a running mate.
