Akufo-Addo approves upgrade of Districts, Municipalities

President Akufo-Addo in pursuant to Section 3(1) of the Local Government Act, 2016 (Act 936), has given Executive Approval for the status upgrade of 15 districts and municipalities across the country.

This decision follows a request from the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development (MLGDRD) in line with provisions under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

In a statement issued by the sector minister, Martin Adjei–Mensah Korsah and dated November 7 noted “Accordingly, the following Municipal and District Assemblies are duly upgraded pending finalization of all necessary legal and administrative processes.”

According to a statement, two Municipal Assemblies—Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly and Techiman Municipal Assembly—have been elevated to Metropolitan status.

Additionally, Gomoa East District Assembly has also been upgraded to a Metropolis.

In total, twelve other District Assemblies have been promoted to Municipalities.

These include Bole District Assembly, Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly, Atwima Kwanwoma District Assembly, Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly, Obuasi East District Assembly, and Sekyere South District Assembly.

The remaining upgraded districts are Ningo Prampram District Assembly, Anloga District Assembly, South Tongu District Assembly, Shama District Assembly, Techiman North District Assembly, and Pru East District Assembly.

Additionally, the statement noted that requests to elevate Ho Municipality to Metropolitan status, as well as to upgrade Offinso North and Birim North districts to municipalities, are currently under review, along with various petitions for the creation of new districts.
