A non-governmental organization, Pencils of Promise has launched a fundraiser aiming to undertake a project to mitigate the impact of the flood - caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam - on education.
It is seeking to raise about $350,000 to sponsor the project which would include the construction of new classroom blocks for the affected schools, the repairing of damaged structures, and supply of educational logistics.
The Country Director of Pencils of Promise, Freeman Gobah, announced this on the sideline of a donation exercise to victims of the flood in Mepe and New Bakpa.

“Pencils of Promise globally is raising funds, we have launched a $350,000 fund to be able to take care of some of these repairs and supplies to schools”, he said.
He indicated that his outfit is assessing the impact of the flood on education across the Volta Region and hence would tailor a comprehensive project to cover all the affected schools.
Mr. Gobah said they are in talks with all stakeholders to ensure academic activities are fully restored in schools in the flooded areas.
“For us, education is our mission, we have been to other [affected] communities. We have been to Anyarko and Fiaxo, and we've seen their situations. Our team will continue to monitor and assess the impact of this flood as the water is receding.
We are in contact with the Regional Education Directorate and so wherever they think our help is needed we are ready to support them with supplies or even building of new classroom blocks”, he said.

Pencils of Promise donated 1,000 bags of sachet water and packs of sanitary towels to victims at New Bakpa in the Central Tongu District and replicated the same at the safe haven in Mepe RC Basic School in the North Tongu District.
