The North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has made known his intention to undertake a comprehensive resettlement and compensation for victims of the Akosombo and Kpong Dam spillage floods.
He announced a GH¢100,000 emergency rent support for victims who are still putting up in tents, after they were displaced by flood water in September 2023.
Mr Ablakwa announced this after successfully filing his nomination form to contest the parliamentary elections on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress.
“As we speak, 1,360 of our fellow constituents, my beloved constituents remain in tents. That is unacceptable, that is inhuman, that cannot be allowed.
"And so in my next term, I am going to dedicate all efforts toward the total, comprehensive, resettlement and compensation of the over 12,000 victims of the VRA spillage.
“As a goodwill gesture, to show how committed I am, today, I am putting aside 100,000 as emergency support for our brothers and sisters who are still in the tent”, he said.
Mr Ablakwa stressed that priority would be given to nursing mothers who can access the fund and pay their rent after finding a suitable housing unit to accommodate their families while they wait for a permanent settlement.
He said this follows similar support for sexagenarians who were provided an annual rent advance to enable them to house their families in comfortable environments.
As of October 2023, reports indicate that about 31,000 residents in 19 communities in the North, Central, and South Tongu Districts in the Volta Region, and the Asuogyaman District in the Eastern Region were affected by the floods.
