She emphasised that the primary challenge was navigating the legislative process in Parliament.

“We think that getting a presidential assent shouldn’t be too difficult because we believe that the president should be in line with this. Remember he is a gender champion so he will be happy,” she explained.

Her comments after Parliament unanimously passed the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill 2024 into law after several years of deliberation.

This landmark legislation aims to ensure a significant number of women hold key positions in governance, public life, and decision-making spaces, thereby enhancing the lives of women across the country.

Madam Minkah-Premo also addressed concerns that the bill might unfairly advantage women over men, clarifying that the bill includes indicators to ensure sectors comply until gender parity is achieved, at which point the program will cease.

She assured that the bill's purpose is to foster equality, not to create an imbalance.

She further noted that the bill is grounded in Article 17(4) of the constitution, ensuring its alignment with Ghana's legal framework.
