The Interior Minister, Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor, has described as unreasonable, a request made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC)that government should provide them with details of security personnel detailed to monitor elections in the North.
He said no government would succumb to such an untenable request.
“That is an unreasonable request to make, when the NDC was in power, nobody made that request, and no responsible government will accede to such an unreasonable request,” he retorted
The Minister made these remarks in an interview with Joy FM's correspondent, Seth Kwame Boateng, after his return from Tamale where he assessed the extent of damage caused by the recent clashes.
Touching on his tour of the north, Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor said Ghana is not a lawless state, and any body found to have fallen foul of the law will be dealt with severely.
According to him, some people in the north have with impunity committed grievous crimes, adding government will call them to account.
“Some people in the northern Region, especially, Tamale feel they can get away with murder. They don’t believe the government is capable of enforcing law and order in the region. But that is wrong, there should be general appreciation that Ghana is not a lawless country.”
The Minister confirmed suspects will be brought down to Accra for investigation and prosecution.
“Those found to be innocent will be sent back to their homes, and those found to be culpable will be brought to book” he assured.
He said government will ensure that the upcoming general elections will be held in peaceful atmosphere, especially in the Northern Region.
Responding to calls for the reshuffling of security personnel in the north, Dr. Addo Kufuor said that will not be necessary for now, adding, government is assessing the situation on the ground and will act accordingly.
