The Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) PLC has hosted its 15th National Farmers Forum in Accra, with a focus on “Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security.”
The event brought together farmers, policymakers, government officials, agricultural experts, financiers, the 2024 National Best Farmer awardees, and other stakeholders to discuss strategies to address climate challenges affecting food security.
In his remarks, ADB’s Managing Director, Alhassan Yakubu-Tali, underscored the importance of this year’s theme.
“The theme for this year’s celebration is very appropriate as it highlights the need for the state and citizenry to commit to adopting better agricultural practices that address the growing challenges posed by climate change and expand productive capacity to enhance food security,” he said.
Alhaji Yakubu-Tali also emphasized the role of climate-resilient agriculture in reinforcing food security and economic stability, aligning with Ghana’s commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goal 2.
“We need a robust agricultural system that empowers farmers, ensures food security, and supports economic growth,” he stated.
Investments and Interventions
Highlighting ADB’s ongoing investments, Yakubu-Tali revealed that over the past eight years, the bank has increased its funding to the agricultural sector.
“The Bank’s investment in agriculture has seen steady growth with total agricultural loan stock increasing from GH¢453.20 million in 2016 to GH¢1.41 billion as of October 2024.
"This figure excludes non-funded facilities such as letters of credit and guarantees granted for the purchase of agricultural inputs, machinery, equipment, and raw materials,” he noted.
He added that ADB continues to support government interventions aimed at improving agricultural productivity, food security, and economic growth.
ADB is currently collaborating with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture on the second phase of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ2), which is moving from a subsidy model to a smart input credit system.
Support for National Farmers’ Day
Mr. Kwame Asiedu Attrams, General Manager of Agribusiness at ADB, reaffirmed the bank’s dedication to Ghana’s agricultural sector, including its sponsorship of the GH¢1 million ultimate award for the National Best Farmer.
“The 15th National Farmers Forum is a testament to ADB’s sustained support for Ghana’s agriculture sector, reinforcing its role as a leader in agribusiness financing and a dedicated partner in the nation’s pursuit of food security, sustainable farming practices, and economic resilience,” he stated.
Mr. Attrams also encouraged the 2024 National Best Farmer awardees to incorporate climate-resilient practices discussed at the forum, highlighting the role of the forum in fostering an ecosystem that advances sustainable agriculture.
