Residents of three communities in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti region have staged a demonstration against a local quarry mining company for allegedly causing damage to their property and exposing them to health risk.

Clad in red and black, the residents of Patakro, Kwapia, and Wioso poured onto the streets to express their anger at the adverse impact of the quarry's operations on their livelihoods.

They are asking the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the local assembly to call AKOSDWOMO Quarry Company to order.

The Spokesperson for the residents, Kwame Gyasi, alleged that the company’s operations have led to the destruction of farms, buildings, and other household equipment in the communities without the payment of any compensation to the affected persons.

He says the company has also failed to engage the communities on the environmental and health impacts of the quarry operations on residents.

"Improper processing procedure, that is blasting of chippings disturb the people and also destroy properties. When they blast, it explodes into thick air and gathers dust for the people to inhale, which is very harmful to the people's health. The huge chippings that destroy homes, farms, crops, vehicles, and roads," he noted.

A resident and victim of the quarry operation, Rev. Charles Atakpa, who has worked on a mine for close to twenty years, says the quarry firm is failing to adhere to standard operations.

"At times, they will announce that they will blast at 4:00 am but 3.30am or 3.40am, they will blast unawares. It is giving us problems; the dust, the chippings," he complained.

Like other concerned residents, he has called on the Environmental Protection Agency to intervene.

Managers of the AKOSDWOMO Quarry Company are yet to respond to the concerns of the residents.
