A ranking member on Parliament’s Works and Housing Committee has blamed the government for contributing to the perennial flooding in Accra and other parts of the country partly due to the lack of drainage systems in some communities.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Middaynews on Thursday, Mr Vincent Oppong Asamoah said government appears to be only interested in the construction of roads.
“..Government doesn’t care about investing in drains. How do you construct roads without constructing drains?” he quizzed.
According to the Dormaa West MP, due to the lack of drainage systems, the roads constructed are washed away when it rains heavily.
He added that government must prioritise the construction of drains, especially in Accra since the city is a low-lying area.

“If you have a city like Accra and you don’t put so much money to construct drains and covets very well, every time that it rains, we lose a lot of money,” he noted..
His concerns follow reports of flooding in some parts of Accra after Wednesday’s downpour.
One of the suburbs of Ngleshie Amanfro in the Ga South Municipality, Peace Town, has been completely cut off by heavy rains on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Director of Forecasting at the Meteorological Department, Dr Joseph Porturphy, has urged residents living in flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds as the rains are expected.
He says the rains are expected until the second week of July, since it is the rainy season.

“So, we will plead again that if it is a flood-prone area, then you just move out. If the rains subside then you come back,” he appealed.
Dr. Portuphy also advised against commuting to frequently flooded areas, adding that alternate routes must be taken.
Again, he advised drivers to be cautious on the road and park their vehicles when in flooded areas until the water recedes.
