Accord DJs some respect – Kofi Hayford admonishes

Joy FM broadcaster Kofi Hayford, has bemoaned the disrespect that is usually associated with the disc jockeying career.

According to Kofi Hayford, a section of Ghanaians have over the years looked down on DJs, considering their craft as inferior.

Sharing his concerns on Saturday, October 25, 2024, when he appeared as a guest on the Road to Guinness Ghana DJ Awards 2024 show on Joy Prime, he said that behaviour should not be encouraged.

Before commending Merqury Republic, the organizers of the DJ awards for holding the event for the 12th time, Kofi Hayford told the host Michelle Agyekum, about his encounter with an acquaintance that sought to disrespect radio broadcasting and disc-jockeying.

“A mate from basic school came into my inbox and said that he was disappointed that I was a Radio Broadcaster, and that when I was in school I was very smart and he thought I’d become a doctor. About a year later he sends me a song and says that his junior brother is in music and so he wants me to feature the guy on my Tuesday radio show [TheOverdrive on Joy FM]”, he narrated.

The bubbly broadcaster exclaimed, “what kind of disrespect is that?”

Kofi Hayford, who is acclaimed for his exquisite music presentation, believes that prior to the establishment of the Guinness Ghana DJ Awards, many did not regard the disc jockeying career and there are still people who do not revere the craft.

He, however, argues that the misconception must be discarded, because entertaining listeners through disc-jockeying is a science and an art that many will suffer at executing. He also asserted that a lot of musical radio shows revolve around DJs and that some of those shows might not stand the test of time without the heavy involvement of the DJs.

He thus advised that “it’s about time people shifted from the misconception that DJs are nothing to write home about”.

“And that’s why I’m saying Merqury Republic has done absolutely brilliant in instituting the Guinness Ghana DJ Awards and successfully running it for 12 solid years… I’d give them their flowers every single year”, Kofi Hayford intimated.

The 12th edition of the Guinness Ghana DJ Awards comes of at the Palms Convention Center on November 9 and will feature performances from some of Ghana’s favourite DJs.
