Police at Abuakwa, near Kumasi in the Ashanti region have arrested two members of a robbery syndicate suspected to have robbed a number of churches and financial institutions in the area.
Thirty-year old Felix Opoku, 19-year-old Emmanuel Asiedu and three others who are currently at large have been terrorizing residents and businesses in the area, according to police report.
The robbers confessed to police they broke into nine Churches and stole musical instruments as well as electronic gadgets.
The affected Churches are the Assemblies of God Church at Boaso, the Church of Pentecost at Atwima Maakro, Dadease branch of the Baptist Church and the Universal Calvary Church-Sepaase and the Christ Redeemer Church, Atwima Manhyia among others.
Also, the suspects allegedly attacked the offices of Eden Microfinance and the Electricity Company of Ghana at Nkawie and Abuakwa respectively.
A police swoop at Kobeng near Nkawie led to the retrieval of dozen computers, electric generators, television sets, mobile phones, money counting machines and unspecified amount of cash from a private house.
A few hours later, Felix Opoku and Emmanuel Asiedu were arrested and police are still looking out for their three other accomplices.
The Abuakwa District Crime Officer, ASP Jeremiah Alale, told Nhyira News the activities of the syndicate and one other group have been a nightmare to the police in the area.
The two Junior High School drop-outs have been very co-operative with police investigations, he said.
ASP Alale urged members of the public to volunteer information leading to the arrest of the wanted criminals and further cautioned people who bought stolen items from robbers that they also risked prosecution.
