The Aboso Gold Fields Limited in the Western Region donated 900 mono-desks to 14 schools in its catchment area to aid teaching and learning in basic schools.
The donation was aimed at promoting teaching and learning among the pupils who hitherto were using broken furniture of had nine for their studies.
The pupils of the education-driven municipality in the Western Region, had smiles on their faces as they were presented with new logistics.
Six desktop computers, two multi-function printers and a set of office furniture were given to the Municipal Directorate of Education to help promote quality teaching and learning in the area.
Community Affairs and stakeholder engagement Manager, Abdul Razak Yakubu speaking to the media said, the foundation enjoys healthy collaboration with the Ghana Education Service in the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipality to develop and implement educational programs aimed at alleviating various educational challenges.
"The programs we have executed since the establishment of this foundation in 2002 to alleviate various educational challenges in this municipality includes the provision of school blocks, facilities, scholarships, teacher’s motivation programs such as payment of top-up allowances to teachers among others."
“This donation is in response to an appeal made by Ghana Education Service and the Assembly members to Goldfields Damang to help ease various challenges,” he said
Mr Yakubu encouraging the pupils to study hard and making it known to them the numerous scholarships and benefits they could enjoy from the mining giant gave an example of a former scholarship beneficiary, Joshua Eduful from Menhuntem (Mile 10 Village) who has gained a full scholarship from Wright State University in the United States of America to study MSc Biological Science.
“Goldfields Ghana Foundation presented a cheque worth ¢18,941 to Joshua Eduful to cater for his Visa acquisition and travelling expenses. The cost of his senior High and Tertiary education was borne by Gold Fields Ghana Foundation through its annual program and you can be a beneficiary so far as we continue to mine in your community and you dedicate yourself to learning," he advised.
Municipal Director of Education for Prestea Huni-Valley Mary Vida Kwofie, in her speech, acknowledged the previous contribution the foundation has made to its host community as indicated above.
She commended them for being pacesetters in solving most of the challenges faced by teachers and pupils.
Madam Kwofie added, the municipality is blessed to have Gold Fields Ghana limited and for that matter Gold Fields Foundation within them day in day out to promote the welfare of education.
"If we look at the number of activities that Goldfields Foundation has done for education, there is nothing that can move them to do that apart from love."
She indicated records available to her shows that students who have benefited from the foundation have gone far and entreated the pupils to take their lessons serious and gain from the opportunities.
On behalf of the GES, Mary Vida Kwofie pledged to make sure the desks and other materials received will be in good use and shape.
