Abodakpi pushes for Zoomlion exit

A prominent member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Member of Parliament for Keta, Dan Abodakpi, is pushing for Government to abrogate all cleaning contracts with waste management company Zoomlion. Mr Abodakpi argues that certain portions of the agreement contain inconsistencies, which violate the principle of decentralisation and therefore should not be allowed to continue. He first made this point yesterday, when he addressed a rally at Kasoa to mark the 30th Anniversary of the June 4 uprising Kasoa. Speaking in an interview with Joy News, Mr Abodakpi said Zoomlion cannot justify collecting money for cleaning communities in which the company does not operate. ”I am aware that common funds that were meant for various municipal, metropolitan and district assemblies have some portions meant for sanitation. These amounts are deducted at source to be used to pay for the services of Zoomlion,” he stressed. He said the conduct of business by the waste management company defeats the purpose of decentralisation. He was appalled by the fact that the company which was originally signed on to clean markets is paid monies expected to go to the district assemblies to cater for their sanitation needs. Mr Abodakpi insisted that its high time the ruling administration abrogated government’s contract with Zoomlion. Meanwhile officials of ZOOMLION are as yet unavailable for comment on this matter.
