The North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has lauded Speaker, Alban Bagbin for admitting the Minority’s Private Members’ Motion to investigate the National Cathedral Project.
The motion, sponsored by Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, and Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah among others, will, if carried by the House, see a committee constituted “to conduct an inquiry into the National Cathedral of Ghana project and all related matters.”
“I would like to, first of all, commend the Speaker Alban Bagbin for his tremendous courage and good judgement he has exhibited in this matter by admitting this motion,” he said in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Friday.
The committee will subsequently make recommendations for the House’s consideration.
According to Mr Ablakwa, the motion is long overdue, adding that it will help in unravelling “all matters associated with this scandal-dominated project.”
He listed a number of issues such as funding, procurement, inflationary prices, transparency, conflict of interest, whether it is a national project in the first place, among others.
He reiterated that with the numerous issues surrounding the project, it has to be probed.
The development comes about a month after two eminent clergymen and members of the Board of Trustees of the controversial National Cathedral project have called for its immediate suspension and a financial audit undertaken.
The two – Archbishop Duncan Williams and Rev Eastwood Anaba said their call is based on the controversies surrounding the project.
According to them, the suspension will pave the way for transparency and accountability to be provided to the Ghanaian people.
