Soccer great Abedi Ayew Pele says there was no fishy deal in the National Middle League game between his club, Nania FC and Okwawu United on Wednesday that recorded a ridiculous scoreline.
Nania beat Okwawu by 31 goals to niI to qualify for the Premier League but the sheer number of goals and the manner in which they came immediately raised doubts about the competitiveness of the game.
But Pele told Joy Sports even though he regrets the lack of competition in the game, which he attributed to the numerical advantage his side enjoyed over Okwawu United ‘there was no monetary consideration from any quarters’, insisting that he does not even know the chairman of Okwawu United and does not see how any dastardly act would have been perpetrated without him noticing it.
At a time Okwawu had exhausted its three substitution options, four more players limped off the field of play apparently injured and unable to continue with play.
And Pele said just after his side scored the fifth goal, he left the match because he knew there was no way Okwawu would benefit from their numerical disadvantage.
At the same time as the despicable game wore on, two other clubs in the league were also recording similarly shameful results in their match.
Great Mariners, in the same group as Nania and tied on the same number of points, were scoring freely against Mighty Jets, banging in as many as 26 goals to nil.
The Ghana Football Association begins investigations into the games with a first hearing on Friday afternoon.
Many have condemned the games as ‘fixed’ and called for stiff sanctions for those involved.
