The Aflao border complex project, abandoned nearly 30 years ago is set for completion this year.
The Bank of Ghana, Ghana Commercial Bank and Eco Bank have reached agreement with the government to mobilize funds for the project.
Accordingly the Minister of Finance, Mr. Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu and officials of the three banks were at Aflao late last year to acquaint themselves with the current state of the project.
Mr. Emmanuel Impraim, Commander in-charge of the Aflao sector of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service gave the hint when he briefed the Ghana News Agency on plans towards the completion of the project.
The facility includes about 45 detached blocks of two and three storey residential flats respectively and a single storey office block.
He said fresh evaluation of the project was being
processed by the Finance Ministry. Mr Impraim noted that except for about five, the
rest of the residential flats had been completed piecemeal
over time by CEPS, Bureau of National Investigations (BNI)
and Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and were being
occupied by some of their staff. He said the project would be expanded to include a modern car park, which would be hired to the public.
Mr. Impraim said a sewerage system would also be put in place to end the seasonal floods within the border area while the spaces under the office complex would be turned into a warehouse.
According to him, extra offices that might be available would be rented out to private entities whose presence would not pose any security risk to the country. Mr. Impraim said the project would enhance the country's image to visitors and provide the right working environment.
Five years ago the project was evaluated to cost 72 billion cedis to complete instead of about one million cedis in 1972.
A section of the public commended government for the major facelift at the frontier and looked forward to the completion of the border complex.
