Ghana has been described as a relatively peaceful country on the globe. This is not by co-incidence. Perhaps it’s because the millions of people on the land have been gifted and endowed with some reasonable level of tolerance. Tolerance permeates all levels of the Ghanaian social structure. There is political tolerance, religious tolerance, economic tolerance etc.
A unique characteristic of the Ghanaian tolerance is that when things become intolerable, Ghanaians exhibit no serious sign of intolerance but quickly move to make the best alternative decisions. This is because Ghanaians know and can see what is good, what is bad, what can lead to trouble and what can lead to peace.
When the National Democratic Congress was in government Ghanaians gave them a long rope. At the right time in 2000, Ghanaians spoke with a loud voice, saying ‘ye NDC people, everything that has a beginning has an end. Ye go into opposition, be reformed and transformed and ye shall be reconsidered’.
After eight (8) years in opposition and after begging for forgiveness and reconsideration, Ghanaians have listened and Ghanaians have spoken with one voice, saying ‘ye NDC people, thy sins are forgiven, thou hath been reconsidered, come tell and demonstrate to thy people, ye hath reformed and transformed and ye shall do exactly as have been promised thy people’.
It is important to note that this collective decision by Ghanaians was taken at the time when even under the NDC there was no clear manipulation and executive interference in the judiciary with impunity, there were no Kangaroo loans from Kangaroo banks like barber’s shops and hairdresser’s salons, there was no proliferation of illicit drugs in the country involving even a minister of the legislature, there were no such disgraceful incidents at its apogee like that of Dr. Richard Anane’s ‘inter-ministerial conference promiscuity’, there was no purchase of Hotel de Wa Wa Wa, there were no sale of Ga lands and other government properties with impunity and the list goes on. That is not to say however that the NDC was without problems and troubles. Given that the NDC background is military, at least the eight years of democratic governance was approached with some decency.
Now in 2008, Ghanaians have again outlived their tolerance after having unanimously asked the NPP to come for trial in 2001. The NPP has been tried and tested for eight (8) years, from 2001 to 2008. As usual, Ghanaians have spoken with one loud voice, saying ‘ye NPP people, ye hath deceived thy people. From now, ye falleth into opposition. Ye shall be reformed and transformed, and ye shall beg. Thy people shall listen and at the appropriate time in future, thou shall be reconsidered.’
Fellow Ghanaians, we have demonstrated once more that:
- We are principled
- We act when the iron is hot
- We give people the benefit of doubt
- We give people long rope
- We do not discriminate
- We are not and do not behave as fools.
- When people show remorse they can be reconsidered in future
