Four men, who allegedly attempted to swindle another man, GH¢550.00 were on Monday remanded into prison custody by a circuit court at Cape Coast.
They are Joseph Nyarko trader 25, John Sammy, 40, trader, 27-year-old Haruna Salifu alias Farouk and 25-year-old student Sanni Awudu.
They all pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit crime and attempting to commit crime, and will reappear on Friday, November 2, 2007.
A fifth suspect, Kwaw Botchwey, is at large.
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo told the court, presided over by Mr Richard Asiedu-Badu, that the complainant in the case was a surveyor living at Kojokrom, near Sekondi, and that on October 14 this year, he received a telephone call from an unknown caller who claimed to be residing in the United Kingdom.
He alleged that the said caller told the complainant that he knew him and would be sending him some mobile phones worth GH¢550 through an agent.
He said the next day the complainant received another call, purporting to be from the agent, who told him he had received the mobile phones, and that he should meet him at the Adisadel Post Office in Cape Coast to collect them.
He said when he got there, Nyarko, who was waiting for him in a cab showed him a bag which he alleged was containing the phones and asked him to give him the GH¢550 before he hands over the bag to him.
He said the complainant told him he did not have that much and that he was going to borrow some money from Mankessim to pay for the phones, but Nyarko drove away.
The complainant suspected a foul play and reported the matter to the police, who traced and arrested Nyarko.
Nyarko admitted the offence and mentioned the others as his accomplices who gave the bag to him to send to the complainant.
