The timely intervention of security personnel from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) saved a suspected thief from being lynched on campus.
An eyewitness told Ghana News Agency that at about 9pm last Thursday, the suspect, a man in his mid-20's was seen on the 8th floor of Independence Hall Annex with a big bag removing clothes of some students from the drying lines during a power outage.
The source said a student who saw him raised the alarm, after which the suspected thief took to his heels down the stairs to escape but on the 6th floor, some students who heard of the alarm accosted him.
The source said in his bid to swerve them, the suspect used the metal railings but fell down and was lying down motionless for sometime and the students thought he was dead.
It said when the students tried to lift him up, they could not find him but was later found among a group of students praying nearby.
The source said the suspect was taken to the porters' lodge, and assaulted by the students but the timely intervention by the security personnel prevented him from being lynched.
