The Deputy Central Regional Minister, Mr. Samuel Obodai, on Friday directed the Upper Denkyira District Assembly to ensure that all areas affected by floods in the area, since last Sunday, when the Offin river overflowed its banks, are disinfected to stem the outbreak of an epidemics.
Mr Obodai, who issued the directive when he visited the area to acquaint himself with the situation, expressed worry that already mosquitoes have began breeding in some of the flooded areas, and that prompt action ought to be taken.
In the Dunkwa township, about 928 persons have been displaced, and 12 houses have collapsed, with other buildings, including the local Ahmadiyya School, partly submerged in water in five suburbs of the township.
Tollbridge, Akwakrom, Bediaso, Accratown and Sofoekurase suburbs recorded 628 displaced persons who were resettled in structures belonging to a defunct mining company.
At Akrofuom, Mbeatodei, and Mfantsiman, and some cottages, about 29 kilometers from Dunkwa, about 315 people have been completely cut-off, following the floods, while a bridge at Mfantsiman which links it with the two other villages has collapsed.
Mr Obodai, who was accompanied on his rounds by the District Chief Executive, Mr Richard Anane Adabor and some regional and district officials of NADMO, said the affected persons would have to be relocated.
He said he has also directed NADMO officials to present a report on the situation for appropriate action to be taken.
