Oddly Enough

Couple in court for making noise during seven-hour sex

A couple has been charged with disturbing the peace because they made too much noise during sex. Jessica Angel and Colin MacKenzie had been issued with an order requiring them to prevent ‘screaming, loud moaning, swearing and raised voices’ after police were called to their flat 20 times in just four months. However, following further complaints from neighbours, the couple were charged under the Environmental Protection Act. They face a £3,000 fine if convicted. ‘We exceeded the noise pollution to the point we were arrested and taken out of our own house and told we couldn’t have sex,’ 34-year-old Miss Angel – the noisiest culprit - told the paper. Mr MacKenzie, 45, from Sturt, South Australia, said: ‘How can you live in a place where you can’t have sex? It’s ridiculous. Anyway, it’s mostly Jessie. The sex goes from four to seven hours, five nights a week. I’ll probably die of a heart attack – she’s almost killing me.’ A 72-hour order issued to Miss Angel required her to cease ‘emanating any and all environmental nuisance’ including ‘screaming, loud moaning, swearing and raised voices.’ Despite that order, police were called back within two days after a further complaint from neighbours about the couple’s noise sex. They were woken by police officers, arrested and taken to their local police station, where they were formally charged and ordered to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court next month. Detective Chief Inspector Trevor Lovegrove of Sturt police said the incident was one of the more interesting matters police had had to deal with. ‘We don’t want to be seen as the killjoy police because we’re certainly not. People have a right to privacy within their own home, but when their actions impact others police need to step in before a situation escalates,’ he said. A neighbour told the paper that he had been wakened one night by screams – ‘it was quite loud and they sounded very obscene,’ he said.
