The death of late President Mills has been a revelation to many. His sudden demise brought about a lot of mourning in all parts of this country, and by all manner of persons. Irrespective of age, social status, gender, religion, tribe, and political affiliations the entire country mourned this great man! For most observers, this moment would forever be remembered, perhaps in our history. President Mills was indeed mourned and heralded by all. Funny enough and rather remarkably, looking back in history, this country has lost several great men but their demise never stirred such emotions like that of our late President Mills. On our various media, it was news after news, and coverage upon coverage of the state of the nation. In all regions and institutions, Ghanaians mourned. Funny enough, there was no shame in shedding open tears! Our gallant men in society all wept, and felt no shame in doing so! It was so because the death of this man revealed his true self and identity! It was after his death that people truly appreciated his personality!
Yes, President Mills was a man of varied personality! He was a great academician! A great sportsman! A great religious man! A great citizen! Above all, considering our political environment, the late President Mills was a great politician! Yes, this was a man who stood up for what he believed. He presented honesty, accountability, humility, patience, fortitude, to mention but a few. Our political environment or atmosphere, as we all know, has been one that has been perceived with indignation. The caliber of politicians being bred in this nation today leaves more to be desired. Corruption has always been the theme and for this reason, the country suffers! Despite all this however, President Mills embarked on his political journey in order to make a difference and indeed, he distinguished himself as a politician! For many, he failed to do much for this nation but in the end, he is still remembered for his messages of peace, hence the name, King of Peace- Asomdwee Hene! Perhaps, his real cause for penetrating our political realms was to spread this message of peace and unity, and not to partake in our mundane politics! Rather unfortunately, most people failed to acknowledge this truth about this man until his demise!
It was indeed overwhelming how the country mourned! During the entire period of his demise and preparations for burial, there was unity and peace throughout the country! For once, Ghana stood united! Several countries have learnt from us with admiration how the country stood together during this grieving moment. During all this while, there was something I personally learnt, and perhaps many of us might have taken note of.
The Ghana that mourned the late President Mills, mourned him for his personality or character! Everyone who paid glowing tribute to this great man, all had common words to describe him! Humble, honest, gentle, generous, polite, peaceful, sincere, etc! That was his personality, and for that loss, Ghana mourned! The question that I kept asking myself during this time was: What do people have to say about me? Would I one day die and have people say only positive things about me? How would I be remembered? Would I be remembered fondly, or uncaringly? Clearly, everyone had something good to say about this man, even children! What would people say about me, should I die this day?
Our politicians have a lot to learn from this man! For a while, it seemed that our country had lost her virtues of honesty, accountability, peace, unity, among others. All over in our various media, we kept hearing one report of chaos after another! The peace that this nation prides herself so much with is being destroyed by our politicians! We are being divided each day by these unscrupulous and selfish people for their own gains! All these were linked to our politics! The reports on our various politicians were either of corruption, or greed! All seemed to be interested in their personal gains over that of the nation! Clearly, one could hardly mark out an exceptional leader, until President Mills died! The Ghana that mourned this man did so for his personal attributes! Indeed, he is an example worth emulating! He should be a challenge to our leaders! As citizens, we ought to challenge ourselves and perhaps follow his examples or if possible, go beyond that! His mourning re-echoed a common ideology! The ideology that Ghana appreciated pious leaders! The ideology that this country still treasured peace and unity! The death of President Mills brought about unity and peace in this country, and I pray and hope that even after his burial, this country would still stand together in unity!
Already, on our airwaves, we have started listening to the usual rattling and rumblings from some of our politicians and rather unfortunately, it is quite disappointing! It is fascinating how conveniently forgetful the human being can be! It is barely a week since President Mills was buried but already, some people want to break the peace we are currently enjoying by evoking all sorts of unwarranted attacks. President Mahama is already under attack, and so is his vice! Would we ever learn? The Ghana that mourned President Mills, mourned him for his noble cause of peace! We need peace in this country! Let not our politics divide us, as a nation, but let us strive to stay united! Let us fight for peace and unity, and not war and division!
