A 40- year-old suspect in the custody of the Madina Police, Yaw Baah, who was being held for threatening to kill his mother, has reportedly bitten off the nose of a policeman.
Baah, who is said to be an ex-prisons officer, reportedly bit off the nose of Inspector Samuel Aryee, while being taken to hospital on August 8, this year.
Inspector Aryee, popularly referred to by his colleagues as Atta Aryee, is currently on admission at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The Madina District Police Commander, Superintendent Joseph Owusu-Bempah told the Daily Graphic Monday that Baah was in custody for allegedly threatening to kill his mother.
He said although the Madina Magistrate’s Court had granted the suspect bail, Baah could not provide a surety to be released.
He said in the morning of August 8, 2012, Baah reported sick and had to be taken to hospital by the investigator, Inspector Aryee.
According to the Mr Owusu-Bempah, upon reaching the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), Baah reportedly bit the nose of the investigator, without any provocation.
He said Baah, however, claimed that the investigator slapped him while they were on the vehicle.
He indicated witnesses in the car at the time of the incident, however, denied the accusation that the investigator slapped the suspect.
A Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Plastic Surgery Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr A. G. Laing, told the Daily Graphic that the prospect of the nose surviving was not good.
That, he explained, was because it took five hours after the incident before the patient was brought to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
He said the bitten off nose was under a 10-day observation after which it would be determined if it could be stitched or a new nose would have to be reconstructed.
