Financial independence: GFA on course

Kwesi Nyantakyi, President of the Ghana Football Association says the body's aim of becoming financially self-dependent is about two years away. Latest figures reveal the FA is closing in on reaching that target, according to the official website of the Ghana Football Association. The GFA operates as an independent body with some support from government in the area of funding for salaries of coaches and national team travels. However, the GFA President is hopeful that the football body would attain its target of having an $8 million budgetary support for its operations annually by 2010. "We are on the road to reaching that target. The Premiership is now valued at $2 million after introducing a valuation system. And we would keep on reviewing it every time to make sure we really maximise the full value of the league. "The Ghana Football Association would be self-sufficient by 2010. At this stage, we would be able to really implement all our plans and get our operations moving.” In the last three years, improved management practices and performances have seen sponsorship for Ghana Football soar to great heights with packages from Gold Fields Ghana - a mining firm, MTN, Guinness Ghana, Onetouch and others. Despite the improved cash injection, the GFA has still not attained its objectives as contained in the body's four-year Business and Development Plan. And Mr Nyantakyi says he is aware of the task of keeping on with the good works. "It's a difficult situation here in Ghana. But, we have still got to keep on working to ensure that football reaches that stage where we would be self sufficient. "At that stage, there would be a well structured national juvenile league, women's football league and an improved division one league. "We have scored a B+ not an A because we have not achieved all our targets." Source: GFA
