Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, a presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday presented 50 maxi bags of maize valued GH¢1,500 (15 million cedis) to the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council for distribution to flood victims in the region.
Dr Apraku, accompanied by Mr Paul Okoh, Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, said the flood disaster was the worst ever recorded in the country and called for sympathy and empathy for the displaced.
He said the level of devastation should strengthen the collective resolve of all Ghanaians to prevent disasters of such magnitude from occurring in future by evolving early warning mechanisms.
Dr Apraku, who is also the Member of Parliament for Offinso North, said there was the need to build stronger and better housing structures that would withstand disasters.
On his chances of getting elected at the NPP national delegates conference to contest next year elections, Dr Apraku said the Party would have to reward dedicated service, hard work and competence and on that basis, he was optimistic of winning the presidential primaries.
Mrs. Winifred Bawa Dy-Yakah, Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, who received the donation, thanked Dr Apraku for the gesture and urged individuals and organizations to express their sympathy by donating something to help the victims, many of whom are poor peasant farmers.
