Onion farmers in Kwahu Amanfrom and Mpaem have appealed to the government to rehabilitate the 30-kilometer road linking Begoro/Mpaem/Amanfrom to facilitate carting of farm produce to the marketing centres. The Assemblyman for Kwahu Amanfrom, Mr Kwasi Avevor said this at a forum organized for farmers by Government Accountability Improves Trust (GAIT) at Mpaem. He said large quantities of farm produce were getting rotten on farms and traders capitalized on the deplorable road network as a result of torrential rains to buy farm produce cheaply. Mr Avevor said traders were buying a bag of onion, which sold at a farm gate price of one million cedis and at a dictated price of one hundred thousand cedis. He said farmers were compelled to sell the produce at that low price to avoid the produce getting rotten on the farm. Mr Avevor said the situation was so disturbing that farmers were finding it difficult to re-pay loans. "A few drivers plying the area have taken advantage of the poor road network to not only charge exorbitant fares but also over load their vehicles." The District Chief Executive for Fanteakwa, Mr Ebenezer Ofoe Caesar said the district assembly was considering giving a face-lift to roads linking the area from the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA).
