Governments have been called upon to have respect for citizens, show good governance and promote human rights to ensure peace.
"I emphasise the importance of having structures and institutions in place to promote and protect peace and human rights and provide an effective remedy when these rights are violated," Mr Anthony Nii Nikon, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Peace Ambassadors, an International Non-Governmental Organization, said on Monday.
He said in a statement in Accra ahead of International Peace Day slated for September 21 that governments must be cautious, responsible and respect
the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was the foundation of freedom, justice and peace of the world.
Mr Nikon said governments must work at the injustices, discrimination and abuses that often characterized the society and also act in balance for
the interest of the various groups, which made up the population.
He advised African leaders not to be self-seeking and self-centred. They should also end social injustices and persecution of their citizens.
