The Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has in recent times come out strongly on government for the undue delay in payment of thesis and bursary grants for the 2011/2012 academic year. After negotiations and dialogue failed to produce a positive result, we were left with no option than to declare a national demonstration which was scheduled for Monday, 7th May, 2012 in Accra. Following our final (3rd) press interaction and declaration of a demonstration on 2nd May, 2012, we are aware several meetings have been held by officials of government to get the money released. The leadership of our association has therefore received several assurances from people who matter in government on this issue. Other well meaning Ghanaians have also acted in diverse ways to support our course. Information available to us is that the Ministry of Finance has now approved the money and payment is expected from the Controller and Accountant General into the account of the Scholarship Secretariat latest by Tuesday, 8th May, 2012 for onward payment to the various universities. As a result of these assurances and acting in good faith, the leadership of GRASAG has suspended the intended demonstration till further notice. We will continue to monitor developments to ensure that deadlines are adhered to. We wish to draw government’s attention to the fact that anything apart from what has been communicated to us will incur the wrath of the entire members of GASAG. We want to extend our appreciation to all who have been with us throughout these challenging times especially the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Registrar of Scholarships, the media and many others who worked behind the scenes in supporting our course. Finally, we urge all our members to remain calm and be patient with us as we monitor events leading to the release of the grants. We will keep you posted on all developments as and when necessary. Signed Dr. Samuel Bert Boadi-Kusi (National President)
