The Nyinahin Magistrates’ Court presided over by Mr. Augustine Essah, has imposed a fine of 400,000 cedis (40GH¢) each on five people from Betinko near Nyinahin for failing to pay special levies towards the development of the town.
They are Mary Tawiah, Esther Appiah, Adwoa Amadie, Kwarteng Kwakye and one Seth.
The five accused persons would serve three months imprisonment if they fail to pay the fines, whilst bench warrants were issued for the arrest of two others namely Georgina Asare and Kwadwo Donkor who failed to appear before the court.
Mr. Robert Forson of the Atwima Mponua District Assembly prosecuting, told the court that the Chiefs and people of Betinko agreed that females and males should pay special levies of GH¢ 4.5 and GH¢ 6 respectively towards the construction of a borehole to solve the perennial water problem facing the community.
He said the accused persons failed to pay the levies after several warnings and the Unit Committee Members reported the case to the District Assembly after which summons were issued for their arrest and charged with the offence.
