Property worth thousands of Ghana Cedis were destroyed on Sunday when fire gutted parts of the Kumasi Central market.
It took the fire service several hours to put out the blaze. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Kwabena Owusu Ampratwum of Luv FM who visited the scene reported that most of the stores destroyed belonged to traders who deal in shoes and cloths. He said Fire Service personnel found it difficult to put out the fire because access routes to the fire area had been blocked by structures built by traders.
The Mayor of Kumasi, Mr Samuel Sarpong who visited the area on Sunday evening told Joy News he was informed on phone about the fire and quickly called the Ghana National Fire Service and the security agencies to the scene.
At least ten stores have been affected, he noted.
The Ghana National Fire Service Fire have commenced investigations into the incident, and “I believe in a very short time they will come out with their result”, Mr Sarpong said.
Meanwhile, three persons have been arrested for attempting to steal from the remains.
