The Family of a 39-year-old man shot and killed by the Police at Edwira in the Ashanti Region on suspicion he was an armed robber is daring the police to provide proof.
In the immediate however, the family wants the government to intervene and investigate the matter, as well as bring the policemen involved to book.
A police night patrol team shot and killed Yakubu Iddrisu on Sunday night while on his way to his village in the Edwira-Sekere-Dumasi District of the Ashanti Region in the company of two relatives.
The family believes their kinsman was wrongfully killed by the police in a case of mistaken identity, however, police say the three men are armed robbers.
According to Alhassan Grumah, a brother of the deceased, Iddrisu and the two others, Gyato Issah and Mumuni Inussah, all farmers, were returning from the Edwira market at about 730 pm after selling their maize and shopping, when one of the motor bikes on which they travelled developed a fault.
While attempting to mend the broken motorbike, the police patrol team chanced upon them, shot Iddrisu and arrested his two companions after accusing them of being robbers.
The two survivors have since appeared before a circuit court at Mampong while the deceased has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The police claim the three were arrested at midnight, but the family insists the farmers were wrongfully arrested and shot at at about 7:30pm while no offensive weapons were found on them.
The family members therefore want the government to set up a high-powered investigation into the incident and the policemen involved punished.
