The police are hunting for a suspected car snatcher alleged to have shot and killed a police officer.
Lance Corporal Iddi Braimah was killed on Tuesday during a shootout between suspected car snatchers and the police.
Addressing a news conference in Accra Thursday morning, the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Patrick Timbilla said the police had a tip-off about the activities of three car snatchers who were selling two stolen cars – a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Camry - at Ashaiman near Tema.
The police, he said, dispatched men to the hideout but upon reaching there, “they really located them (robbers) trying to offer them (cars) for sale but upon the approach of the police,” the robbers sensed danger and opened fire on the police killing Lance Corporal Braimah.
The police also killed one of the robbers - identified as Prosper Kwateku alias Kush - during a shootout Wednesday. One of the alleged robbers escaped with gunshot wounds while another surrendered to the police later.
Patrick Timbilla told Joy News that the arrested robber is currently assisting the police with investigations.
