MR Kofi Annan, immediate past Secretary-General of the United Nations, will return home on Tuesday, January 23 following his retirement last month, after a successful two five-year terms of service.
A statement signed by Kwamena Bartels, Minister of Information and National Orientation, invited the public to the airport to give Mr. Annan a hero’s welcome.
It said President J.A. Kufuor and Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, ministers of state, members of the diplomatic corps, leaders of political parties and traditional leaders would be at the airport to welcome the former UN boss.
As head of the UN, Mr. Annan’s selfless and dedicated service to humanity earned him various global honours including a Nobel Peace Prize and the local Busumuru title meant for a selfless servant of the state.
Mr Annan became only the second African, after Boutrous Boutrous Ghali to be appointed head of the UN in 1996.
He was also the only Secretary-General who rose through the UN system to become its head.
