Many children and teenagers across the globe are prone to bedwetting, research has indicated.
Bedwetting among children can be inherited from a close relation just like a person inherits long legs or blue eyes from their parents; therefore, children with the challenge should not be ashamed to seek for advice from their parents to curb it.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Ultimate Health Programme, Tuesday, a Child and Associate Researcher, Dr. Judith said though the causes are unknown to most parents, researchers suggest that the challenge can be linked with small bladder and inability of the bladder to hold urine for a long time.
She has therefore urged parents to cultivate the habit of waking their children up at regular times from night sleep to urinate in every four hours saying, “…this will help the children to wake up by themselves to urinate when the need arises”.
Dr. Judith said though children are mainly linked with bedwetting, some adults are also prone to it.
She said studies have shown that at least 2% of adults lack control of their urine especially at night. This she said is called nocturnal enuresis.
She mentioned stress, anxiety and unstable bladder, as the primary factors of the challenge adding that occasionally, urinary tract infection can also cause the challenge.
Contrary to the beliefs and perceptions of a section of Africans that the challenge among adults is as a result of witchcraft, generational curses among others, she said some drugs have been made available to provide a long-term solution to the problem.
She therefore advised that adults with bedwetting problems must consult a physician for examination and treatment since it could cause them their marriages or relationships in the near future.
