A district magistrate court at Breman Asikuma, has remanded a 30-year-old unemployed man for defrauding 26 people from Breman Beedum of a total amount of 630 Ghana cedis.
The plea of Festus Adjei from Mbra, a suburb of Breman Asikuma was not taken and he would re-appear before the court on September 6, 2007.
Police Chief Inspector Gershon Awuyeh told the court presided over by Miss. Cynthia Hammond that in April this year the accused told Mr. Mustapher Mensah, Assemblyman for Breman Beedum of his intention to form a non-governmental organisation to access loans from financial institutions for the people in community.
He said the accused collected 630 Ghana cedis from the Assemblyman and other people supposedly meant for the preparation of identity cards and other documents at the bank.
Chief Inspector Awuyeh said after collecting the money, Adjei vanished from the community and all efforts to trace him proved futile.
Prosecution said the matter was reported to the police and upon a tip off, the accused was arrested last month at his hideout at Breman Asikuma.
Chief Inspector Awuyeh also told the court that the police were investigating similar reports of fraud made against Adjei by some people at Amanfopong, Fosuansa and Odoben in the area.
